Winter Lawn and Landscaping Care - Five Star landscaping - Landscaping Experts Calgary

If you’re like most Albertans, probably your lawn and landscaping doesn’t even cross your mind once the snow has landed and winter officially arrived. Instead of wasting energy worrying about your grass, you’re keeping busy just trying to keep the sidewalk clear and salted. But winter-care can have a very real effect on your lawn and landscaping come spring.

Be Aware of Foot Traffic.

Excessive foot traffic when grass is dormant during the winter can prevent it from growing well in spring. In the same way that walking the same trail over and over in spring and summer can cause a dirt path to form right through your lawn, you should be mindful to not walk over your grass in winter. Dormant isn’t the same as dead, so try (as much as possible) to treat your grass the way you would in summer.

Don’t Leave Junk Out.

Kiddie pools, wheelbarrows, and play stations for kids may be convenient to have out during the summer, but keeping them out all winter long is bad for your lawn. In the same way excessive walking can damage your lawn, the constant presence of a wheelbarrow or other large object will make your grass more vulnerable to weeds and disease, and it will be slower to sprout during the spring.

It’s important to look at your yard as a tiny ecosystem. What’s done in winter affects what will happen in spring and summer. When you work with lawn and landscaping experts like the Five Star team we can keep your snow cleared away and your yard in great shape for the next growing season.
