Most Canadians would say Christmas, Thanksgiving, or Easter is their favourite holiday. Many also love Canada Day, Valentines Day, or Halloween. But at Five Star Landscaping, our favourite holiday is probably Earth Day. This year Earth Day falls on April 22nd, and Canadians largely celebrate this holiday by spending time in nature or intentionally not using power. Another way you could consider spending your Earth Day is planning your garden or landscaping for this spring!
For us, Earth Day is about remembering our connection to the natural world. In Western culture, we have a tendency to contrast nature and human-made as mutually exclusive spaces, but humans are natural. We are a part of nature. Research has shown that people who become disconnected to the Earth are more likely to struggle with mental illness and just spending time outdoors in wild spaces can relieve symptoms of anxiety and depression. However, our innate human need for nature goes further. The microbes in dirt work as an antidepressant in humans, so gardening and playing in the dirt makes people happier.
These are just a few of the reasons why our Calgary landscapers at Five Star are so passionate about their work. We know that homeowners with beautiful outdoor spaces spend more time outside, and people who spend more time outside live better, happier lives. We want to help Calgarians to live better. For us, that means working with individual homeowners, business owners, and even municipalities to craft beautiful outdoor spaces that are attractive to spend time in.
Spring is arriving soon, so April is the perfect time to consider what changes you want to make to your landscaping. Whether you have a modest plan — add some shrubs here and a tree there — or an ambitious project in mind, it’s never too early to get started. The expert Calgary landscapers at Five Star can help you create the backyard oasis and front curb appeal you’ve always wanted. Our professionals are able to recommend the best, low maintenance plants for the Calgary climate, and they can help you prioritize and organize your ideas into an achievable plan. We can look at your property and identify which areas get the most sun (perfect for a garden), which area has the most shade (perhaps a future outdoor dining or lounging area?), where does rain pool, where could you benefit from more privacy, and more.
We know that times have been challenging for Calgarians in the last few months. The spread of COVID-19 has made many Canadians very worried, but while many things are closed, remember that your backyard and the great outdoors are always open! We hope that all Calgarians are taking the opportunity to enjoy time outdoors today, but we also hope that you take a moment to consider how improving your landscaping may lead to you spending more time outside in the future. Our team is here to help.
